Old Well II

This shot of UNC's Old Well was taken from the vantage point I've historically favored, across Cameron Avenue, just west of South Building.

For those who have not visited Chapel Hill, the Old Well is one of the two most recognizable landmarks on the UNC campus. Tradition says that freshmen should drink from the well the night before classes begin for good luck. Unfortunately, just down the road at NC State, tradition says that students should drive drive down I-40 to Chapel Hill in order to urinate in the the same well. As a result, I favor hygiene over history and photograph the well without drinking from it.

The urination story made me think of why Glenwood High School keeps the football field and track under lock and key. SHG kids burned "SHG" into the 50 yard line of the football field a few years ago.

Peeing in the well is pretty gross though. Just think 100 years ago or so NC State students probably could have been arrested for poisoning the well.

There's something about NC State students and urination in general. Historically, they have problems with students urinating in the stands at their football games.

As for vandalism at high school athletics facilities, the Havana track was badly vandalized by PORTA kids several years ago. It was really sad, because they had scraped together the money for a very, very nice all-weather track and installed it may be two years before. I can't imagine them finding the cash to resurface it.
