Raleigh hydrangeas with flash

This is the same shot that I posted yesterday, except that I used a fill flash here rather than just taking advantage of the ambient lighting. I'm curious as to whether visitors like this shot or the original one better.

One caveat to this vote- how you see the pictures will certainly be dependent on your monitor. As a result, there are two variables- personal preference and monitor settings.

definitely like the darker exposure.

I'm partial to the first image as well, which is why I posted it originally. I think these two shots illustrate the potential shortcomings of auto settings. Left to make the decision for itself, the camera would've flashed... but I think that the shot is more interesting without it.

I'll be interested to see if others agree or not.

I like the original. The flash definitely bleaches the blue tones of the petals and you lose some of the depth that makes the original that much nicer.

Unfortunately, I remain unable to see these things when I'm at the tripod. I have no idea what will look good and what will not. As a result, I end up taking similar shots using a lot of different settings in hopes that one will capture what I want.

I agree that the blossom looks better without the flash. With the flash the green foliage looks better, but the blue is over exposed. I wonder what this would have looked like if the flash had been softly bounced from the lower right side?

With an external flash I'd certainly have a few more options on these sorts of things. As is, I'm pretty much left to direct the flash and the focus coordinately.

If the leaves look better on one and the flowers look better in the other, I guess it's a perfect situation for photoshopping. I wish I were more sophisticated with the software.

I like the first one better too.
